How to Compare Fractions
There are several methods to compare fractions:
- Cross-Multiplication: Multiply the numerator of the first fraction by the denominator of the second, and vice versa. The larger product indicates the larger fraction.
- Common Denominator: Convert both fractions to have the same denominator, then compare numerators.
- Decimal Conversion: Convert both fractions to decimal form and compare the values.
For example, to compare 2/3 and 3/4:
- Cross-multiplication: 2×4 = 8 and 3×3 = 9, so 3/4 is larger
- Common denominator: 2/3 = 8/12 and 3/4 = 9/12, so 3/4 is larger
- Decimal: 2/3 ≈ 0.667 and 3/4 = 0.75, so 3/4 is larger
