How to Find the Least Common Denominator

The Least Common Denominator (LCD) is the smallest number that is a multiple of all denominators.

Steps to find the LCD:

  1. Find the prime factorization of each denominator
  2. Take the highest power of each prime factor
  3. Multiply these prime factors together

Example:

  • For 1/4 and 1/6:
  • 4 = 2²
  • 6 = 2 × 3
  • LCD = 2² × 3 = 12
