About AST/ALT Ratio
The AST/ALT ratio (also called the De Ritis ratio) is a useful tool in evaluating liver function and determining the cause of liver injury. AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase) and ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase) are liver enzymes that help assess liver health.
Understanding AST/ALT Ratio
- Normal AST/ALT ratio: 0.8-1.2
- AST/ALT > 2.0: Suggests alcoholic liver disease or cirrhosis
- AST/ALT < 1.0: Common in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
- AST/ALT > 3.0: Strongly suggests alcoholic liver disease
