Heat Cycle Management Tips
- Proestrus: Watch for swelling and bloody discharge. Keep away from male dogs.
- Estrus: Peak fertility period. Maximum supervision needed if not breeding.
- Diestrus: Pregnancy possible. Monitor for signs of pregnancy if mated.
- Anestrus: Resting period. Normal behavior resumes.
- Hygiene: Use dog diapers or keep indoors during heat.
- Exercise: Supervised exercise only during heat cycles.
- Veterinary Care: Regular check-ups to monitor reproductive health.
Heat Cycle Phases Explained
- Proestrus (7-10 days): Swelling of vulva, bloody discharge, attracts males but not receptive
- Estrus (5-9 days): Peak fertility, clear discharge, receptive to males
- Diestrus (60-90 days): If pregnant, gestation period; if not, false pregnancy possible
- Anestrus (4-5 months): Resting period, no reproductive activity
Important Notes:
- Heat cycles can vary significantly between individual dogs
- First heat typically occurs between 6-24 months depending on breed size
- Smaller breeds tend to have more frequent cycles
- Stress, illness, and season can affect cycle timing
- Always consult your veterinarian for breeding decisions
- Spaying eliminates heat cycles and reduces health risks
- Monitor for abnormal bleeding or behavior changes
