The Barthel Index is a validated tool used to assess a person's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs). It evaluates 10 key activities and provides a score that indicates the level of independence or need for assistance.

Barthel Index Interpretation

  • 0-20: Total dependence - Requires 24-hour care
  • 21-60: Severe dependence - Requires considerable assistance
  • 61-90: Moderate dependence - Requires some assistance
  • 91-99: Mild dependence - Requires minimal assistance
  • 100: Independence - No assistance required
  • Note: Higher scores indicate greater independence
