About Dead Space
Dead space refers to the portion of the respiratory system where gas exchange does not occur. It includes anatomical dead space (conducting airways) and physiological dead space (alveolar dead space).

Important Information
- Anatomical Dead Space: Volume of conducting airways (typically 150-200mL in adults)
- Physiological Dead Space: Total dead space including alveolar dead space
- Alveolar Dead Space: Ventilated but non-perfused alveoli
- Dead Space Ratio: Vd/Vt ratio (normal: 0.2-0.4)
- Clinical Significance: Increased dead space indicates ventilation-perfusion mismatch
- Normal Values: Anatomical dead space ≈ 2mL/kg ideal body weight
