PCR Calculation
About PCR

The Protein Creatinine Ratio (PCR) is a simple and reliable method to assess proteinuria.

PCR Formula:

PCR = Urine Protein (mg/dL) / Urine Creatinine (mg/dL)

Daily Protein Excretion ≈ PCR × 0.2 (g/day)

PCR Interpretation:
  • <0.15: Normal
  • 0.15-0.3: Microalbuminuria
  • 0.3-3.5: Moderate proteinuria
  • >3.5: Nephrotic range
Proteinuria Classification:
  • • Normal: <150 mg/day
  • • Microalbuminuria: 30-300 mg/day
  • • Macroalbuminuria: >300 mg/day
  • • Nephrotic: >3.5 g/day
Clinical Significance:
  • • Kidney disease marker
  • • Cardiovascular risk factor
  • • Treatment response indicator
  • • Prognostic factor
Sample Collection:
  • • Random urine (most common)
  • • First morning urine (preferred)
  • • 24-hour collection (gold standard)
Limitations:
  • • Affected by muscle mass
  • • Diurnal variation
  • • Exercise effects
  • • Hydration status
Professional Resources:
  • • Nephrologist
  • • Primary care physician
  • • Endocrinologist
