About Reverse FOIL
Reverse FOIL is a method used to factor quadratic expressions into binomial factors. It's the reverse process of FOIL (First, Outer, Inner, Last) multiplication.
For a quadratic expression ax² + bx + c, we find factors (px + q)(rx + s) where:
p × r = a
q × s = c
p × s + q × r = b
p × r = a
q × s = c
p × s + q × r = b
Steps:
- Find factors of the first coefficient (a)
- Find factors of the last term (c)
- Test combinations to find the correct middle term (b)
- Write the factored form
