Calculate lens magnification and reproduction ratios

About Lens Magnification

Magnification is the ratio of the image size to the object size. It determines how large or small a subject appears in your final image. This calculator helps you understand the relationship between focal length, subject distance, and magnification for various photography scenarios.

Magnification Photography Tips

  • 1:1 Magnification: Life-size reproduction, common in macro photography
  • Greater than 1:1: Subject appears larger than life (super macro)
  • Less than 1:1: Subject appears smaller than life (normal photography)
  • Focal Length: Longer focal lengths increase magnification at the same distance
  • Subject Distance: Closer subjects result in higher magnification
  • Extension Tubes: Increase magnification by moving lens further from sensor
