Calculate Poisson's ratio and lateral strain from elastic constants and measurements

📐 Poisson's Ratio Formulas

ν = -ε_lateral / ε_axial
ν = (E - 2G) / (2G)
ν = (3K - E) / (6K)
ν = (λ) / (2(λ + μ))
ν = Poisson's ratio, ε = strain, E = Young's modulus, G = shear modulus, K = bulk modulus, λ,μ = Lamé constants

💡 Tips

  • Poisson's ratio must be between 0 and 0.5 for isotropic materials
  • ν = 0.5 indicates incompressible material (no volume change)
  • Most metals have ν ≈ 0.3
  • Rubber has ν ≈ 0.49 (nearly incompressible)
  • Cork has ν ≈ 0 (no lateral contraction)
  • Negative Poisson's ratio materials are auxetic
